Spirit of Japan

In 2017 I was commissioned by Taiyo Namba, owner of Spirit of Japan in Australia, to document master craftsmen in Sakai, Japan, whilst they traditionally hand-crafted knives. There are many steps and processes that go into knife manufacture in the region. Each person has one role that they master during their lifetime and once that role is complete, the knives are sent to the following master craftsmen who complete the following roles. One knife can take up to 30 hours of work to complete and go through up to four different masters before being ready to sell.

Cameras: Fuji X-Pro 1 and Mamiya RZ67 Pro iiD with Leaf Credo 60 back.
