Whilst a lot of Australians think of this problem as external and isolated to regions such as the USA, the reality for Indigenous Australians is very different. Indigenous Australians are one of the most marginalized races on the planet, they make up 28% of the prison population in Australia but only 3% of Australias general population. One thing that has shocked me about living in Australia is how socially acceptable casual racism is. In July 2020, during the middle of a global pandemic, the world watched as millions of people risked their health to deliver an incredibly powerful message to their governments. I documented the protest in my hometown of Newcastle, NSW. The festival was made up of circus performers, performing artists, musicians and poets. We toured to capital cities as well as tiny regional locations as we weaved our way up the coast. Our bus broke down, we slept on floors and in venues, we performed to as many as 3,500 people at a time and as few as three in certain regions, we cooked for each other with food from the dumpster, loved, cried and everything in between. These images are a window into that world that flashed by all too quickly. I was commissioned by the Newcastle Museum in 2014 to photograph 25 portraits of people holding images they were in or connected to from that day to mark the 25th anniversary of the event. This work was exhibited at the Newcastle Museum in 2014 and subsequently 5 years later in 2019 and produced as an A3 catalogue detailing stories of those who appear in the images. There are many steps and processes that go into knife manufacture in the region. Each person has one role that they master during their lifetime and once that role is complete, the knives are sent to the following master craftsmen who complete the following roles. One knife can take up to 30 hours of work to complete and go through up to four different masters before being ready to sell. I landed in Australia without knowing anyone and was adopted by those in the images, the project was my way of saying thank you to those that touched and changed my life. The body of work was purchased by the State Library of Victoria in 2011 and now forms part of their permanent collection.
